This was a painful one for me to watch. I have a deep rooted fear that Calgary is going to overtake us and the historic implosion of the Habs will continue another year. |

The play-in wins by both these teams did nothing to help either team. False belief in the team. This year is no different, in that either team will face a rough 1st round opponent. Sure, anything could happen for CGY or MTL in the playoffs, but both teams have been inconsistent this year. MTL had a decent start and a poor February, CGY had a poor start and up and down ever since.
While I will always be a fan, I hope we miss the playoffs by a wide margin or make it. Almost doesn't cut it. The only positive by us making the playoffs is that we are not coasting in, we have to go on an incredible winning streak to do it. That can be a dangerous team. Would be epic to give TOR another 1st round exit and fun to have a rematch with the Jets in round 2.

You can sure notice the much faster pace they're playing at. Sutter hockey is starting to be much more noticeable. Too late for this season IMO but no way are they going into rebuild mode. |

The wins will help to foster the culture around this team and get them bought in, I do think that helps for sure.
They are also playing tighter in terms of system, but looser (body language) out there as well, something has shifted in the room recently.

I think the negativity was building due to a lot of things.
The under-achieving was weighing down the top players, add in the general insecurity that comes before and with the Trade dead line.
The days off because Van got Covid gave them time to practice what Sutter was teaching and it shows.
They seem to be playing more like a team. Its fun to watch. |

Agreed, unlike the prior month where I turned it on and was prepared to utter a groan within about 3 minutes, I feel much better watching these guys right now. Still got nervous the other night when, with under a minute left, Sutter had the 4th line out there getting caved in inside their own end.

Make sure you take 5 minutes today and read this interview with David Rittich - the most candid NHL interview I have ever seen.

Yeah, I saw that too - awesome to get a little behind the scenes for once.

I hope he does well enough for the Leafs that he gets a starting role somewhere.

Yeah, one of the true good guys out there. Flames had to trade him, but was sad to see him go nonetheless.
Dude is better than a lot of guys out there and teams like Ottawa would HAVE to be looking at him next year.

Thanks, good read. If you read between the lines, it sounds like Ward is a pretty big ass hole. IMHO Rittich deserved a bigger run with the Flames than he got. |

It sounds like he's an old-school guy, which is a problem in today's NHL for sure. Kids are dominating veterans in nearly aspects of the game. I do get going with Talbot in the playoffs last year, but he showed his lack of coaching savvy when he threw Rittich in to that 3-3 game and then waited for 2 more to go in before calling a timeout. Should have called the damn time out at 3-2, much less 3-3.
Leaning on vets is the right thing...situationally. You should be playing your best players as much as you can and put them in positions to succeed. Talbot was fantastic in the playoffs last year, so, again, not a criticism of playing the veteran keeper, but he (frank)ed over Rittich in that last game by not giving him playing time prior. Everyone knew it too.

Gotta ask. Why the picture of Talbot fighting Smith? - fry
Good catch. It was early. I had a fight with my wife. My dog died. I couldn't find my glasses. My ADHD is acting up again.
Nah. Nothing like that.
I just wondered if anybody actually reads this thread anymore so ......
now that you answered my question and I see that 3 people read this stuff here is BSD kissing the goal post. Thanks for caring.

A great game to watch. No shame in losing by 1 goal when you hit 3 posts. And the PK was perfect. They fought hard for 60 minutes Allen had a good game. Tough loss but there's plenty more to go. I imagine Tkachuk will have trouble getting to sleep tonight though. |
